About Tony
THE QUESTIONS CAME BEFORE THE METHOD.
Tony Nila’s work did not begin with an attempt to create another dog-training system. It developed from repeatedly asking what behavior alone could not explain.
Tony Nila is the author of Latent Minds: The Cognitive Revolution in Canine Learning and a Canine Cognitive Specialist.

Origins
BEFORE LATENT MINDS HAD A NAME.
Over many years of working with dogs, Tony became increasingly interested not simply in whether a behavior could be changed, but in what the dog was learning from the life around it.
The questions kept returning to the same sources:
People
Environments
Boundaries
Movement
Consequences
Relationships
Repetition
Access
Daily Life
Practical work did not deliver a single dramatic answer. It kept leading toward deeper questions.
“What does this dog understand about the situation when the prompt is gone?”
The performance question:
“What can I teach this dog to do?”
The developmental question:
“What is this dog learning to understand?”
These questions do not have to be enemies.
Latent Minds expands the inquiry rather than pretending trained responses do not exist.
Professional Background
THE WORK BEHIND THE QUESTIONS
CANINE BEHAVIOR
Applied behavior work with dogs, from family households to more complex behavior cases.
COGNITIVE LEARNING
Ongoing study and application of canine cognition — how dogs gather information, form expectations and make decisions.
WOLFDOGS
Professional experience with wolfdogs, informing a long-standing interest in natural learning and boundaries.
FAMILIES & CONSULTATION
Remote behavioral consultation and education for the people who live with dogs every day.
RESCUE & ADOPTION
Behavioral work in rescue and adoption settings.
EDUCATION
Educational workshops and materials for owners and professionals.
Influences
THE QUESTIONS DID NOT DEVELOP IN ISOLATION.
EDWARD C. TOLMAN
Latent learning — the idea that learning may exist before immediate outward performance reveals it.
CHARLES P. EISENMANN & LONDON
An earlier body of canine work that remained a reference point in Tony's thinking about the depth of what dogs may understand.
These were influences, not instruction. The framework that followed is Tony’s own.
An Evolving Body of Work
FROM EARLIER WORK TO LATENT MINDS.
Before Latent Minds, Tony’s educational work included Raising Your Perfect Puppy. It belongs to an earlier stage of the same question — one that kept widening.
Latent Minds organizes ideas about:
Cognition
Latent Learning
Natural Boundaries
Contextual Language
Environmental Understanding
Emotional Regulation
Social Connection
Developmental Progression
Autonomous Decision-Making
This book did not appear from nowhere.
It represents the organization and maturation of questions Tony had been pursuing for years.
The Latent Minds Ecosystem
WHAT LATENT MINDS IS BECOMING.
Latent Minds is beginning with the book, but it is being developed toward a larger educational framework.
Tony’s work is moving away from depending solely on one-to-one explanation, and toward a structured body of knowledge that can continue teaching without requiring him to personally explain every concept.
